The Call: A Play in 1 Minute—Or Less

[M dials a number while holding the phone up to her ear. Waits. Phone rings. Waits. Waits much longer than seems reasonable.]

M: Hi.

M: Why can’t you talk? Are you with her [dripping with contempt] again?

M: [intense, hissing] I don’t care if it’s over. You’re MINE.

M: [feigned shock] Moi? [Blind rage] YOU did this to me. YOU. So if you don’t like what’s happened you can blame your own damned self.

M: [Sweetly] Oh? [Darker] So it’s going to be like that, is it?

M: I’ve got something for you to listen to. [Holds phone up to radio. Plays chorus from “I Will Survive”; sings along. Shouts] Hear that? Ha!

[Slams down phone.]
